Though we are in the world, we are not of it. In John 17, Jesus is praying to His Father and says, “…I have given them your word, and the world has hated them because they are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. I do not ask that you take them out of the world, but that you keep them from the evil one. They are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. Sanctify them in truth; your word is truth…”
When we accept Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior, we became a new creation. We became children of God, citizens of Heaven. We are no longer part of this world. But while we are in this world we have been sanctified (set apart for holy service to God) for the glory of God as co-laborers for the Kingdom.
