Discover Your True Identity in Christ: Transform Your Life Today - Bible Bites
We often define ourselves by our sins and struggles, saying things like "I’m an alcoholic," "I’m an addict," "I struggle with porn," or "I’m gay." Sometimes we even use phrases that seem light-hearted, like "I love Jesus, but I cuss a little" or "I’m a sinner saved by grace," as if our sins are no big deal.
We need to change this mindset. Instead of identifying ourselves by our sins, we should find our identity in Christ! This doesn’t mean pretending we’re perfect or sin-free, but recognizing that our sins don’t define us. In Christ, we are a new creation. The old has passed away, and we are made new! (2 Corinthians 5:17)
If we’ve accepted Christ and follow Him, we’ve been sanctified—purified and set apart for His special purpose. We’re no longer sinners; we’re saints. Yes, we may sometimes sin, but Jesus has paid the price for those sins. We are made clean and spotless by His blood. God no longer sees our sins. He remembers them no more (Hebrews 10:17). So, why should we hold on to them as our identity?
What does it mean to be identified with our Lord and Savior? It means we become who God created us to be. Here’s what God says about us:
- We are known and loved by God, set apart for His purpose. (Galatians 1:15)
- We are redeemed, reconciled, and true children of our Heavenly Father. (Colossians 1:13-14)
- We are free from the bondage of sin and death.
- The Holy Spirit dwells in us, comforting, helping, teaching, and guiding us. (John 14:26)
- We have peace that surpasses all understanding, guarding our hearts and minds in Christ. (Philippians 4:6-7)
- We have a spirit of power, love, and a sound mind. (2 Timothy 1:7)
- We are no longer guilty or condemned. (Romans 8:1)
- We are citizens of Heaven. (Philippians 3:20-21)
- We have the fruits of the Spirit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. (Galatians 5:22-23)
- Jesus is our advocate. (1 John 2:1)
As we follow Christ and grow in our faith, our true identity becomes clearer. To achieve this, we need to trust Jesus as our Savior and surrender to His will. By prayerfully reading the Bible, we learn to hear His voice and live out our true identity.
Let's Pray:
Heavenly Father, we confess our faith, trust, and hope in Jesus, your only begotten Son who died on the cross for our sins, and rose again in victory. Help us to submit to your will in Jesus Christ and live out our true identity as loved, children of yours. In the name above all names - Jesus Christ we pray. Amen!
