Bible Bites - Head and Not the Tail - Deuteronomy 28:13
The Lord will open to you his good treasury, the heavens, to give the rain to your land in its season and to bless all the work of your hands. And you shall lend to many nations, but you shall not borrow.
And the Lord will make you the head and not the tail, and you shall only go up and not down, if you obey the commandments of the Lord your God, which I command you today, being careful to do them, and if you do not turn aside from any of the words that I command you today, to the right hand or to the left, to go after other gods to serve them. -Deuteronomy 28:12-14 (Text bolded for focus.)
"And the Lord will make you the head and not the tail...". What does that mean?
What is God talking about here?
In Deuteronomy, Moses is giving his last address to the people of Israel. Moses has recounted all of God's mighty works and wonders and then explains to the people what kind of blessings they can expect when they follow and obey God. He goes on to explain the curses Israel will suffer if they disobey God in verses 15-68.
When the Israelites obey God, they will be blessed and prosperous. They will be at the top, the head of nations, leading the way, as opposed to the tail, following other nations and being at the bottom.
Even though these promises were given to the people of Israel, I believe they are also for Christians today. In Romans 11, Paul explains how the Gentile believers (non-Jewish believers in the Messiah/Christ) have been grafted in together with God's chosen people. The Church has not replaced Israel as God's chosen people, but the Church has been grafted in.
All believers in God, who follow the Lord will be blessed. We will not be the tail. We will not be at the bottom, but at the top. We will be the head. Thanks be to God for His great love and mercy!
Let's Pray.
Heavenly Father, we thank You for your love and grace. We thank You for your mercies new with each day! Thank you for grafting us in to your promises and grace. Help us to seek You first in all things, to hear and obey You alone. Bless us with new hearts and new minds for You, Lord. We don't ask for the sake of receiving gifts, but we ask so that we can be pleasing to You and more like your only begotten Son, our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. We ask all of this in Jesus' mighty name. Amen!
