Bible Bites - Build Your House On the Rock - Matthew 7:24-27
24 “Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. 25 And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock. 26 And everyone who hears these words of mine and does not do them will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. 27 And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell, and great was the fall of it.” -Matthew 7:24-27
Whatever is not built on the rock of the LORD will fail! Everything that we do on our own without thought or seeking the LORD will eventually fail and be washed away. Our goal is NOT earthy riches and treasure, but to build up treasure in Heaven to the glory and praise of God.
What is the Rock? The rock is the very Word of God. In Isaiah 55:11, God says, "...so shall my word be that goes out of my mouth; it shall not return empty, but it shall accomplish that which I purpose, and shall succeed in the thing for which I sent it..."
Peter reiterates what Jesus is saying in 1 Peter 1:24-25, "All flesh is like grass and all its glory like the flower of grass. The grass withers and the flower falls, but the word of the Lord remains forever."
We have to be careful to not confuse our desires, as good and noble as they may be, with the word and will of God. For instance, David wanted to build God a temple. David's intentions were pure and good, but God's answer was, "no". It was for David's son, Solomon to build the temple of God. If David would have tried to build the temple without seeking God's Word on the matter, it would have been outside of the will of God and it would have failed.
Everything that is not of God, will be uprooted and destroyed. Jesus says in Matthew 15:13, "Every plant that My heavenly Father has not planted will be rooted up..." When we read the Bible we get to know God and we are better able to tune into His voice, so that when we bring a matter to Him, we will hear the answer and be able to truly build on the solid foundation of rock.
