The Great Wave - Bible Bites

The Great Wave - Bible Bites

When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you: when you walk through fire you shall not be burned, and the flame shall not consume you. -Isaiah 43:2

This world can be a crazy place, and it may seem that we are constantly surrounded by the storms of life! Sometimes these storms build up into a giant wave, ready to sweep us away. But even as the great waves approach, we find our hope, comfort, strength and salvation in Jesus.

As followers of Jesus, we have access to the amazing saving grace of God. We are promised that as we pass through the waters, they will not overwhelm us. (Isaiah 43:2) In fact, the Bible tells us that only Jesus saves! We read in Acts 4:11-12 that, “Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved.”

Peter found this out, quite literally, when Jesus came walking out across the water to meet the disciples! When the disciples saw Jesus walking towards them on the water, they were frightened, thinking they had seen a ghost! Peter called out to Jesus, “Lord, if it Is you, command me to come to you on the water.” Jesus commanded Peter to come, and in an initial leap of faith, Peter stepped out of the boat and walked on water to meet Jesus! But when Peter saw the wind and the waves, he became frightened and began to sink! In his fear and desperation, he cried out to Jesus, “Lord, save me.” Jesus immediately reached out His hand and took hold of Peter. (Read the full account in Matthew 14:22-33)

There are some important lessons for us here. Did you notice the contrast between what Peter was able to do when he trusted in Jesus and when he looked at the waves? When Peter kept his eyes on the waves, he was sure he’d be overcome and die. But while he had trust in Jesus, Peter literally walked on water! When Peter was in trouble, he called out to Jesus, and Jesus immediately reached out and saved Peter! This account of Peter, clearly demonstrates the promises of Isaiah 43:2 and Acts 4:12.

These promises weren’t just for Peter, they are for us too! We can take hold of these same promises today. We have assurance that we will not be overwhelmed by the great waves of trouble that come our way. When we keep our eyes on Jesus and call on His name, we know we will be saved, just like Peter.

Let’s Pray:

Our Heavenly Father, we thank you for your love and mercy, and blessing us with salvation, reconciliation, and redemption through the Blood of your only begotten Son, our Lord, Jesus Christ!
We thank you for the promises we now have in Jesus, that no matter the storms of life, we will not be overwhelmed as we keep our eyes on our Savior.

Help us then, to keep our eyes fixed firmly on Jesus and what was accomplished on the Cross. Help us to be faithful and fruitful stewards, bringing you glory and giving you praise, even through the great waves and storms in life. We ask this in the only name that saves, Jesus Christ. Amen!
