Psalm 37:5-6
Commit your way to the Lord; trust in him, and he will act. He will bring forth your righteousness as the light, and your justice as the noonday. It’s so easy to be affected by the world around us, the news we see, politics, division and strife.
It’s easy to let all this sink in and take over that by the end of the day, you might find that you’ve barely given a thought to God or felt you had time to even crack open your Bible. In time you might find that you haven’t prayed, sought, or given any thought to God. You may find yourself totally lost and unsure of what to do. Conversely, you might find yourself with plenty of money in your bank account and consumed with growing your earthly wealth or chasing after the things of the world to bring pleasure.
Many end up putting their faith and trust in the world. Our thinking, our focus, our wants and desires will become like the world, getting darker by the day.
Instead, if we turn from the way of the world and set our eyes and our heart on our Lord and God, we will see a shift within us, and find ourselves gaining a new perspective of the world.
The love of God will begin to inform and direct our actions and even desires. We will get out of our own way and we will see God act and we will be more and more like His only begotten Son, our Lord and Savior – Jesus Christ. We will shine with righteousness and the joy of the Lord, no matter what is going on around us. We will have that peace that passes all understanding.
But, how do we do that? How do we set our hearts on God, and trust Him?
Well, it’s not going to happen just by hoping. It’s going to require some action on our part.
We need to open our Bibles. I suggest praying before you start reading and ask God top open us up to His Word and that He opens the Word up to us. Then we will be open to receiving what we are reading and that we will begin to have greater understanding of what it is we are reading.
It’s also incredibly beneficial to be mindful of what we allow our eyes to see and ears to hear.
Listen to some good Christian music. There is a ton of great Christian music to fit every style and genre. Watch good and wholesome programming, and it’s okay to turn off the news. It’s good to be aware of what’s going on in the world, but we shouldn’t allow ourselves to be totally absorbed and enraptured with it.
In short, we need to surround ourselves with good and holy things, not let our minds dwell in darkness, and we will see ourselves growing day by day in the Lord. Our hopes and desires will become more aligned with His. We will see things in scripture that we never noticed before and understand it more deeply. We will find God and His will becoming our will too.
Colossians 3 is the perfect guide for bringing Psalm 37:5-6 to fruition in our lives! Colossians 3:2 says to set our minds on things that are above, not on things that are on the earth. In Colossians 3:16-17 we read, Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God, and whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.
Lord God, Heavenly Father, we thank you for giving us your Word in the Holy Bible. We pray that you help each one of us to commit our ways to you, trusting in you and not leaning on our own understanding, and that your love, grace, mercy and light will shine brightly through us you continue your perfecting work in us. In Jesus’ mighty name we pray. Amen. I encourage everyone to go and read Colossians 3. Here is a link to read it on Bible Gateway:
