Memorial Day - Remembering Those Who Have Sacrificed

Memorial Day is a day where we pause to remember and reflect on those who have sacrificed and fought with their own blood, often giving their lives in service to the people and nation they love.

My grandfather served in WWII, and was a career military man. So, I grew up with an appreciation for those who serve the nation, but to be honest, for me, Memorial Day was mostly a day off, or the official start of movie blockbuster season, and the unofficial start of summer. It was a day of barbeques and fun with friends.

Now that I'm older and have grown much closer to God and have my own family, my perspective has changed. When I see those who have given everything, including their lives in service, I see an image of Christ.

Jesus came to earth as a Jew to the Jews and His earthly ministry was primarily focused on serving the people and nation of Israel. He went throughout Judea teaching, healing, and blessing many. Jesus worked tirelessly for the people, every inch of the way facing opposition from the legalistic religious elite of His day. Ultimately, He gave everything, including His life in service, not just for the Jews, but for the whole world. None of us are deserving of His sacrifice, but thanks be God His love is greater than our sin.

The Holy Bible is so rich and relevant, there is a scripture that can be applied to every situation in life. For instruction, comfort, to build faith, and so much more!
So, I'd like to leave just a few scriptures below that I think are especially good to read and share this Memorial Day.

Greater love has no one that this, that one lay down his life for his friends. -John 15:13

The memory of the righteous is blessed, but the name of the wicked will rot. -Proverbs 10:7

Cast all anxiety on Him because He cares for you. -Peter 5:7

The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit. -Psalm 34:18

Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of His godly ones. -Psalm 116:15

Give to everyone what you owe them: if you owe taxes, pay taxes; if revenue , then revenue; if respect, then respect; if honor, then honor. -Romans 13:7

Join me in suffering, like a good soldier of Christ Jesus. -2 Timothy 2:3

Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin condemns any people. -Proverbs 14:34
